Change the world

The NMMU Chess club was involved in an outreach programme at Ikhwezelihle Primary School. The Club was found by Lonwabo Charles who started a Chess Club in Motherwell .The main aim of this outreach is to help children in the location by providing equipment and teaching them how to play chess and improve their chess and thinking skills.

On the 24 July 2010 the NMMU Chess Club sent out six members to Ikhwezelihle Primary School to help Charlse train the children. The children were divided into two groups of beginners & intermediates. They were taught about Chess in general including telling them about grandmasters and how to become grandmasters of which most of them were interested.

Some Parents came to support the children and they also attended a talk presented by the Club. The parents were so keen about chess and they couldn’t wait for their children to master it so they can teach them. Overall, the outreach was a great success and the club is looking forward to contribute more to the community.
