The Nelson Mandela University's Madibaz Chess Club hosts their annual OPEN CHESS tournament. This tournament was intiated by Coach Tinus Goosen and has grown since its launch in 2010.
2011 saw the tournament participants increase by double since 2010. The tournament was well attended.
It is a weekend event, which is usually played over a Friday and Saturday and consisting of an A and B section.
There are various prizes which are awarded to participants in the tournament.
Through this tournament, great partnerships were built and strengthend between EP Chess and Nelson Mandela University.
The Nelson Mandela University Open 2017 will be hosted at Missionvale Campus.
